「Worldwide Shadow Education Epidemic and World-Class Academic Success in East Asian Nations: Theorizing Learning Fever Beyond Public Schooling」

要旨

Shadow education is an epidemic educational/learning phenomenon not only found in East Asian countries but also in many other countries around world. With “the rise once again as a source of educational inspiration” (Takayama, 2017) in Programmes for International Student Assessment, East Asian students’ academic success is regaining international public and scholarly attention. While their success is something neither to be caricaturized nor scandalized, it deserves serious scholarly study as to how they achieve such academic success. In Shadow Education as Worldwide Curriuclum Studies (2019) and Theorizing Shadow Education and Academic Success in East Asia (2021), we theorized the academic success and learning culture of East Asian students, such as their level of learning fever, transboundary learning culture, and students as nomad. Such theorization provides us, and those in the West, with novel ideas for understanding the Academic Success of East Asian students as well as to challenge the often-biased representations of East Asian education and its students’ academic success. Additionally, our educational research covering East Asian students shall remain limited without taking shadow education into account. In this respect, we postulate shadow education research to be a way of opening a new educational discourse for understanding East Asian students’ academic success as well as to challenge the Oriental understanding about the topic.
