Comments from President Nagahiro Minato
At the 108th Japan Championships in Athletics, Mr Toshikazu Yamanishi, a KyotoU alumnus, set a new world record to claim his third title in the event, his first in four editions of the tournament. On behalf of Kyoto University, I extend my heartfelt congratulations on this remarkable achievement.
Mr Yamanishi has an outstanding record, having won titles at the World Athletics Championships in 2019 and 2022, and a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Last year, however, despite being a strong contender for the Paris 2024 Olympics, he suffered a disappointing setback, and was disqualified from the 107th Japan Championships. Still, he remained undeterred, demonstrating resilience and unwavering determination. He embraced new training methods and continuously refined his approach, ultimately establishing a style that maintains both speed and form, even with thick-soled shoes. His world record and victory are undoubtedly a testament to his perseverance and steadfast dedication to forging his own path.
Mr Yamanishi’s remarkable success has also earned him a place in the upcoming World Athletics Championships, to be held in Tokyo this September.
Through race walking, he has continued to hone his endurance, mental fortitude, and analytical skills, constantly assessing himself and exploring ways to enhance his performance. His journey of tireless dedication and perseverance serves as a source of inspiration and aspiration for students and all other members of the KyotoU community. I look forward to seeing Mr Yamanishi continue to push new boundaries and reach even greater heights in his future endeavors.
