The 18th Southeast Asia Network Forum, subtitled "Green Technology Enhancement in Managing Environmental Resources to achieve Sustainable Development Goals", was held in Makassar, Indonesia, on 28 October 2023. Launched in 2015, the forum is held in ASEAN countries by Kyoto University and local alumni with the aim of sharing the University's latest academic achievements relating to topics of local interest with communities throughout the region.
The 18th edition of the forum was hosted by Hasanuddin University and the Kyoto University ASEAN Center. Over 100 people attended, including local academics, students, and members of the general public.
The forum opened with remarks from Professor Jamaluddin Jompa, rector of Hasanuddin University, and Professor Kyoko Inagaki, Kyoto University's executive vice-president for gender equality, international affairs, and external affairs.
Following the opening speeches, a lecture titled "New Horizon of Research and Education Collaboration between Japan and ASEAN" was delivered by Professor Yasuyuki Kono, Kyoto University's vice-president for international strategy.
Lectures and panel discussions were then held by Professor Mamoru Yamamoto, director of Kyoto University's Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere (RISH), Dr Nuki Agya Utama, executive director of the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), Associate Professor Mohd Remy Rozainy Mohd Arif Zainol, director of REDAC, Universiti Sains Malaysia, and others.
The forum was then closed with an address by Professor Suharman Hamzah of Hasanuddin University. After the forum, a closed meeting was held to discuss collaboration and exchange between Kyoto University and its alumni in Indonesia and Malaysia, and the further development of overseas alumni association activities.
