From 2 through 13 August, two departments of the Graduate School of Engineering - the Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering and the Department of Urban Management - hosted the summer program, "International Human Resource Development Program for Construction of Disaster-Resilient Countries (DRC)". A total of 43 students from 11 institutions participated. The program focused on "Disaster and Health Risk Management for Liveable Cities", and was organized under the Wild & Wise Collaborative Learning Program with support from Kyoto University.
Of the 43 participants, 22 were from nine overseas institutions: the Asian Institute of Technology, Chulalongkorn University, and Kasetsart University in Thailand; Vietnam National University Hanoi; Mandalay Technological University and Yangon Technological University in Myanmar; Brawijaya University in Indonesia; the National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan; and the Institute of Technology of Cambodia. They were joined in the DRC program by 13 students from Kyoto University and eight auditing from Kansai University.
Day one consisted of an orientation, a lecture on Japanese culture featuring an English rakugo performance, and a welcome party. From 3 to 11 August, participants attended lectures by faculty from several institutions, including the KyotoU Graduate School of Engineering. 5 August was devoted to an internship program conducted by Newjec Inc, while the 9th featured a site visit to Amagase Dam. There, the students learned about the measures in place to control floods under changing climate conditions.
Participants also took part in group work to discuss and present on what they had learned through the DRC program, concluding on day 12 with a final examination.
