On 18 July, Chie Morimoto, a PhD candidate at the Graduate School of Medicine, received the 2018 L'Oréal–UNESCO For Women in Science (FWIS) Japan National Fellowship in the life science category. The award ceremony was held in Tokyo at the official residence of the French ambassador to Japan.
Administered by Nihon L'Oréal KK, in partnership with Japanese National Commission for UNESCO, the FWIS Japan National Fellowship annually recognizes outstanding achievements by Japanese women under 40 who are enrolled in, or expected to proceed to, a doctoral program, and support their ongoing research at domestic universities or research institutions.
Morimoto, who earlier this year won the 10th KyotoU Tachibana Award in the student category, is cited for her work on a "DNA testing method capable of confirming blood relations with relatives as distant as second cousins".
Comments from Ms Morimoto
I am extremely honored to receive this distinguished award, and would like to extend my gratitude to all who have guided and supported my research to this day. My goal is to develop a high-precision DNA testing method, and I am very pleased to see this project drawing positive attention and interest. I am determined to continue my hard work until it yields benefits to society.
