On 1 July, the "Education Unit of the Investment Study", a part of the Graduate School of Management (GSM-KU), concluded an agreement with Tokyo Stock Exchange Inc (TSE) to jointly develop a new stock price index.
The Education Unit is focused on conducting empirical research on securities investment from a theoretical and practical perspective, while TSE is the publisher of the Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX), one of Japan's key equity market indices. The joint undertaking aims to combine the strengths of the two organizations to develop a new index with a view to "expanding the frontiers of Japanese stock indices".
"Our goal is to develop a useful benchmark for long-term investors in Japanese equities," commented Dr Hidetaka Kawakita, head of the Education Unit and a KyotoU professor emeritus.
"We are honored to be working with KyotoU's Education Unit," said TSE Senior Executive Officer Yoshihiro Isaka, before expressing hope that the undertaking will "contribute to the growth of the Japanese securities market."
Project members will keep in close consultation with market participants as they work to come up with a draft index by the end of March 2019 (the final month of FY2018).
