CAAS to subsidize book publication of Africa-related works

The Kyoto University Center for African Area Studies (CAAS) is now accepting applications for the seventh African Studies Publication Program ("Africa kenkyu shuppan josei "), which helps publish in book form the results of Africa-related research being carried out across the University, with funding from the 2016-17 KU discretionary spending (under a program to subsidize the publication of works by early-career researchers). CAAS's program goals are to consolidate the University's African research resources and promote related work, as well as to widely publicize KU's strong Africa focus.

All interested are encouraged to submit applications as follows.

Eligibility

  1. Applicants must be KU students, faculty, or alumni with a doctorate in an Africa-related field earned from the University by 13 September 2016.
  2. Applicants must be under age 40 at the time of application and NOT have a professorship. Any gender or nationality is acceptable.
  3. In addition to works by doctorate holders, Master's dissertations of exceptional quality may be considered for publication.
  4. Up to 1,400,000 yen may be provided for each publication (up to two works may be accepted).
  5. The work must be publishable by 31 March 2017 in Japanese, English, or French. It may cover non-African regions for comparison purposes. The published volume will, in principle, be made commercially available.
  6. Accepted authors will deliver special lectures following publication.

Required documents

  1. Three sets of the manuscript (such as a dissertation) to be considered for publication (any format)
  2. A publishing cost estimate prepared by a publisher
  3. One copy each of the applicant's CV and list of research achievements (any format)

Selection

Submissions will be evaluated by a selection committee comprised of CAAS faculty and external experts. Criteria include potential contributions to both the field covered and Africa.
