Kyoto University Hospital held its 11th iPS Cell/Regenerative Medicine Study Seminar at Shiran Kaikan on 30 January 2015. This seminar program was launched in November 2009 as a means of promoting the hospital's research on regenerative medicine using iPS cells, ES cells, and somatic stem cells; disseminating its achievements; and contributing to the development of medical treatment. Over 100 individuals from Kyoto University and other organizations, most of them medical experts, participated in the 11th seminar.
After an opening address by Professor Michiaki Mishima, Director of Kyoto University Hospital, Mr Masayuki Tanaka, Group Manager of Pharmaceutical Information Services, Ethical Products Department (Nishi-Nihon), Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Ltd, delivered a general lecture entitled "Next-generation treatment strategy for refractory reflux esophagitis". This was followed by three academic lectures: “Pathological analysis of blood disorders using diseased iPS cells” by Dr Megumu Saitou, Associate Professor, Department of Clinical Application, Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA); “Pathological analysis of Mendelian disorders using disease-specific iPS cells -- in a case of epiphyseal hyperplasia of CINCA syndrome” by Dr Ryuta Nishikomori, Associate Professor, Pediatrics Department, Kyoto University Hospital; and "Research on skeletal dysplasia using iPS cell technology" by Dr Noriyuki Tsumaki, Professor, Department of Cell Growth and Differentiation, CiRA.
The seminar was closed by Professor Ryuichi Nishinakamura of the Department of Kidney Development, Institute of Molecular Embryology and Genetics, Kumamoto University, who delivered a special lecture entitled "In-vitro construction of three-dimensional renal tissues based on embryology".
