From 1 through 14 November, four graduate students from National Taiwan University (NTU), a departmental student exchange partner of Kyoto University, participated in the "Global Frontier in Life Science" short-term laboratory course hosted by the Graduate School of Biostudies (GSB).
Based on their interests, the participants were assigned to laboratories of Professors Shin Yonehara, Shigehiro Yoshimura, Fuyuki Ishikawa, and Hideya Fukuzawa to take part in cutting-edge life science research. They had earlier discussed their interests at length with the instructors in charge to help prepare content that matched their needs.
The NTU students devoted themselves to experiments and discussions, as well as taking advantage of the chance to attend some of the ongoing lectures at GSB, on weekdays, and enjoyed the Kyoto autumn on weekends. Throughout the program, they extensively interacted with their counterparts and the faculty at GSB.
The program included a study tour, a departmental one-day trip for international students at GSB, held on 12 November. The participants traveled to the island of Awaji to experience udon making and Japan's culinary culture, while getting to know international students and professors from other laboratories.
Accommodation was provided in a furnished apartment, giving the NTU students a rare chance to experience an aspect of typical KU student life.
A similar program is scheduled for later this academic year for students from the University of Montpellier, France, another academic exchange partner of Kyoto University.
