From 1 to 19 March 2018, the Graduate School of Biostudies held a Wild and Wise Biostudies Workshop (short-term laboratory course) for ten graduate and undergraduate students from five overseas universities — the University of California San Diego, National Taiwan University, the University of Michigan, the University of Paris, and the University of Montpellier — with 11 participants from Kyoto. The Workshop was organized as a Wild & Wise Collaborative Learning Program with support from Kyoto University.
Participants were each assigned to one of ten laboratories based on their research interests. The labs were headed by: Professors Takashi Araki, Hideya Fukuzawa, Hiroshi Harada, Tatsushi Igaki, Fuyuki Ishikawa, Takayuki Kohchi, Michiyuki Matsuda, Minoru Takata, Tadashi Uemura, and Naoki Watanabe. The students performed daily experiments and engaged in discussions while experiencing cutting-edge research. In addition, they attended the annual International Student Seminar, organized by students of the Graduate School of Biostudies, and two lecture series exploring a wide range of topics. They also visited two on-campus research facilities: the Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA) and the Radiation Biology Center.
Weekend activities included a Japanese culture tour featuring Yuzen-dying and tofu-making, with exchange events organized by individual laboratories.
Throughout the program, participants constantly interacted with students and faculty of the host Graduate School, learning about ongoing research. On the final day, they presented the knowledge they gained through these experiences.
