<December> Rice Cake Making Party

Date/Time December 13 (Wed.), 2006  From: 11:30 a.m. ~
Place Terrace next to the Student Lounge "KI-ZU-NA"

The Rice Cake Making Party, an event that we have held annually since 2003 was held in "KI-ZU-NA". This year, though the weather was rainy and cold, a lot of people came to participate and we had fun. Pounding the rice to make mochi is a lot harder than it looks! Not withstanding the difficulty, the participants worked hard and made great-tasting mochi by helping each other. While trying mochi in many different forms, including ozo-ni (mochiin soup), the participants also enjoyed animated conversations with each other. The participants had a good time taking part in a traditional Japanese winter event.

In November, we held a "Maki-Sushi Cooking Class". Sushi is low in fat and is very nutritious. Delicious yet healthy, sushi is one of the most popular Japanese foods worldwide. For most of the participants, it was their first time to make maki-sushi, but everybody did a great job. The dish was filled with participants' beautiful hand-made maki-sushi. Participants enjoyed eating their delicious self-made Maki-Sushi and talking to each other.

<October> Daimonji Mountain & Ginkakuji Hiking

Date/Time October 28 (Sat.), 2006  From: 10:30 a.m. ~
Place Daimonji Mountain & Ginkakuji Hiking

"KI-ZU-NA" organized a hiking event around the campus in October. There are new arrivals at this time of the year, and the event was intended to familiarize everyone with the surroundings of the campus and to increase intercultural exchanges among the participants. First, we climbed Mt. Daimonji, the mountain well-known for a traditional Kyoto ceremony, called "Gozan no Okuribi". This event is one of the famous ceremonies held during the Bon period (August 16). Five fires are lit on the five mountains surrounding Kyoto City with the meaning of seeing ancestral spirits off. It was hard to climb Mt. Daimonji, but the panoramic view from the top of the mountain was breathtaking! After climbing down the mountain, we visited Ginkakuji temple, one of the national treasures of Japan, and enjoyed walking in the garden. The weather was great, and the participants enjoyed making new friends.
