On 10 March, four people associated with the recently formed Kyoto University African Alumni Association (KUAAA) paid a courtesy visit to President Juichi Yamagiwa and Dr Yoshihiro Tokuga, vice-president for university fund administration and alumni affairs.
The delegation consisted of Dr Daniel Baheta, chair of KUAAA and chief of education at UNICEF Kenya, Associate Professor Boniface Kayang from the University of Ghana, Assistant Professor Mamo Hebo Wabe from Addis Ababa University, and Professor Yong Kyu Chang from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS), Korea. They were joined by four faculty from the KU Center for African Area Studies (CAAS).
Dr Baheta thanked President Yamagiwa and VP Tokuga for attending the KUAAA preparatory meeting held July 2016 in Nairobi, Kenya, which contributed to the association's establishment. He then announced a plan to build an African contact network, through which invitations for regular reunions could be sent to alumni in the region.
Next, each attendee introduced himself, and reported on the status of KU graduates in his country. Dr Baheta suggested that Africa-based alumni could assist with the recruitment of students and research project members, expressing a willingness to help the University expand its activities on the continent.
The meeting was relaxed, finally concluding with Dr Baheta presenting President Yamagiwa with an original tote bag produced in commemoration of KUAAA's founding.
