On 30 July 2019, Sir Suma Chakrabarti, president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), visited Kyoto University to meet with faculty and deliver a lecture. Sir Chakrabarti was in Japan 29–31 July on his first official visit to the country in three years.

At the meeting, the EBRD President sat down with Professor Yasuyuki Kono, director of the European Center and vice-president for international strategy, and other KyotoU officials, to discuss how the bank can further strengthen its relationship with the University and expand its interaction with the European Center.

The lecture by Sir Chakrabarti was then presented by the Graduate School of Advanced and Integrated Studies in Human Survivability (GSAIS, or "Shishu-kan") as this academic year's second Special International Seminar, intended for those aspiring for an international career. With students attending from GSAIS and other University departments, the presentation offered an overview of EBRD, and detailed the bank's expanding scope of activities and the skills and qualities required for these efforts.

GSGES intends to follow this with regular lecture events featuring senior EBRD management.
