On 10 June, the 2019 summer program for Kasetsart University, "Changing World — Environment, Agriculture, Society and SDGs", commenced with 14 undergraduate students taking part from the Thai university's six faculties.
The 13-day program was run by the Graduate School of Agriculture (GSA) in conjunction with one of the ILAS courses, "ILAS Seminar (Overseas): Changing Southeast Asia — Environment, Industry and Society", and under the 2019–2020 Kyoto University Wild & Wise Collaborative Learning Program.
Enrolled in the Faculty of Agriculture as short-term exchange students, the 14 participants attended a lecture by GSA Professor Motoki Akitsu, and went on field trips that were designed to provide insights into the country's agriculture, forestry, and natural environment. The trip destinations included: GSA's experimental farm; the Shiga Prefecture Agricultural Technology Promotion Center; the Omi Sonoda Farm; private farms in Kyoto suburbs; the Tea Industry Research Division of the Kyoto Prefectural Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries Technology Center; and the Kyoto Kitayama-Sugi-no-Sato Center. In addition, the students visited the Lake Biwa Museum to learn about the area's aquatic ecosystem, environment, and fishery.
The program also offered cultural activities, where the participants experienced Yuzen dyeing, tried on kimono , and toured the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum, after attending a lecture on Japanese culture and history, delivered by Associate Professor Shikiko Yukawa of the Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences (ILAS) Education Center for Japanese Language and Culture.
Throughout the program, the Thai students studied side-by-side and interacted with 30 participants from KyotoU, who have visited or are going to visit Kasetsart University as part of the "ILAS Seminar (Overseas): Changing Southeast Asia — Environment, Industry and Society", which this year will take place in September.
