On 5 December, Cybermetrics Lab, part of the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, or CSIC), published its November 2018 "TRANSPARENT RANKING: Institutional Repositories by Google Scholar", and placed the Kyoto University Research Information Repository (KURENAI) at fifth in the world and first in Japan.

KURENAI is an open-access (OA) repository managed by the KyotoU Library Network. OA refers to the practice of making research output publicly available online free of charge, and is presently part of a global trend. "Institutional repositories" are a type of OA platform operated by universities and other institutions; as of today there are over 3,000 such platforms worldwide.

KURENAI was launched in 2006, and has since been steadily growing in terms of both articles and site visits. It has been leading the OA movement in Japan over the past years as the country's foremost institutional repository. From 2015, KyotoU researchers are required to deposit all their papers and research outputs into KURENAI, in accordance with the new policy the University adopted that year as part of its renewed commitment to OA.

Kyoto University intends to continuously increase the number of research papers available via KURENAI, so as to contribute to the development of scholarship and fulfill its social responsibilities.
