From 2 through 13 August, the Graduate School of Engineering's two departments — the Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering and the Department of Urban Management — jointly hosted a summer program, "International Human Resource Development Program for Construction of Disaster Resilient Countries (DRC)", for 45 students from 10 institutions. The program was focused on "Disaster and Health Risk Management for Liveable Cities", and was organized under the Wild & Wise Collaborative Learning Program with support from Kyoto University.
Twenty-two of the 45 participants were from eight overseas institutions: the Asian Institute of Technology, Chulalongkorn University, and Kasetsart University in Thailand; Vietnam National University Hanoi; Mandalay Technological University and Yangon Technological University in Myanmar; Brawijaya University in Indonesia; and the National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. They were joined in the program by 18 KyotoU students and five auditing from Kansai University.
Day one consisted of an orientation, a lecture on Japanese culture featuring an English rakugo performance, and a welcome party. From 3 through 10 August, lectures were delivered by faculty from the Graduate School of Engineering and additional institutions. The 3rd also featured an internship program conducted by Newjec Inc, an engineering consultant firm. On 7 August, participants went on a site visit to Amagase Dam to learn about comprehensive measures to control floods under a changing climate.
The students also took part in group work, discussing and presenting on what they had learned through the DRC program.
The 12-day program concluded with a final examination for all participants.
