On 3 July, the Kyoto University Institute for Advanced Research (KUIAS) concluded a general memorandum for academic cooperation and exchange with ShanghaiTech University's School of Physical Science and Technology (SPST). The signing ceremony was followed by a KUIAS-SPST joint symposium at ShanghaiTech.

ShanghaiTech is a research-intensive university established in 2013 by the government of Shanghai and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). SPST is comprised of three divisions — Systems Materials, Condensed Matter Physics and Photon Science, and Materials and Physical Biology — all focused on basic research related to global energy and environmental issues.

The MoU was signed by KUIAS Distinguished Professor Susumu Kitagawa, director of the Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS), and SPST Dean Peidong Yang. Ceremony attendees included iCeMS Professor Easan Sivaniah, ShanghaiTech Vice President and Provost Jie Yin, and SPST's Professor Tsung Chia-Kuang and Associate Professor Franklin Kim, as well as several other faculty and students from the both sides.

With students taking part, the symposium featured research presentations from the two institutions, each talk concluding with a lively Q&A.

The KUIAS-SPST MoU is anticipated to strengthen partnership and facilitate collaboration between the two organizations.
