On 14 June, Kyoto University and the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst: DAAD) opened applications for a new researcher exchange program that was established 17 April, as per an agreement signed by KyotoU President Juichi Yamagiwa and DAAD Secretary General Dorothea Rüland. The program is match-funded by the University and DAAD, and targeted at early-career researchers promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Its goal is to increase the international mobility of highly motivated researchers, and facilitate Japanese-German science and technology collaboration for a sustainable future and SDG achievement.
Focused on SDGs and match-funded by an overseas partner, the scheme is the first of its kind to be implemented by a Japanese higher-education, research, or funding organization.
Promoting SDGs is an important social responsibility of both Japan and Germany, which as world leaders in science and technology are actively pursuing these goals through a variety of policy measures.
Kyoto University, on its part, plans to expand its SDG researcher exchange program to eventually involve other Japanese universities, and aims to act as a next-generation hub for international research collaboration to accelerate the global "cycle of minds".
