On 27 May, the Institute for Integrated Radiation and Nuclear Science (KURNS) commemorated its reopening under the new name with a ceremony and reception in the Kansai Airport Conference Halls.
The ceremony began with KURNS Director Yuji Kawabata delivering a speech and commemorative lecture on “Building an advanced research platform for integrated radiation and nuclear science”. Congratulatory addresses were then delivered by: Nagahiro Minato, KyotoU’s provost and executive vice-president for strategy coordination, research, planning, and hospital administration; Tomonori Nishii, director of the Scientific Research Institutes Division of the science ministry ; Mitsuru Uesaka, president of the Atomic Energy Society of Japan; Yasuhiro Iye, executive director of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS); and Toshiji Fujiwara, mayor of the town of Kumatori.
The reception continued with opening remarks from Hajimu Yamana, president of the Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation . Hideo Nakajima, director of the Wakasa Wan Energy Research Center, then gave a toast. Congratulatory speeches were delivered by: Tomoko Nakanishi, commissioner of Japan Atomic Energy Commission; Tomofumi Nagae, vice president of the Physical Society of Japan; and Akio Takahashi, president of Japan Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc. The event wrapped up on a high note with a closing address from KURNS Deputy-Director Ken Nakajima.
