1. Background and purpose
This three-day, fully-funded workshop is focused on discussion of policy-oriented research on clean energy solutions for Asian and Latin American cities. Participants will share experiences and work together to design sustainable energy solutions for urban areas, and are expected to gain a solid understanding of key policies and instruments that can be developed to help communities establish a low-carbon energy system toward the attainment of local and global goals of sustainable development.
Climate change is likely to exacerbate existing urban environmental management challenges. Large cities are responsible for a significant portion of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and given current demographic trends, their GHG output is likely to increase over time. These challenges highlight the need for cities to rethink how to deploy their assets, protect their people, and prioritize their infrastructure investments, and consider how climate change may impact their long-term growth and development plans.
Based on this understanding, this workshop will present numerous lectures by experts to explore best practices for sustainable urban energy system development. The three-day program combines these talks with hands-on sessions, in which participants will use tools to practice applying policies and scenarios, and learn how to develop their own strategic plans, as well as share findings and lessons between Asia and Latin America.
Publication of an edited volume based on this workshop is under consideration.

2. Eligibility: early-career scholars
This call is for early-career scholars from Japanese and Brazilian universities with an interest in sustainable urban energy solutions or similar topics.
"Early-career scholars" here refer to 1) PhD candidates in their final year, and 2) PhD holders who earned their degrees after 1 December 2012, and are younger than 45.
3. Application procedures
Email the required documents to the corresponding organizer with the subject, "Workshop Kyoto", by Wednesday 15 November 2017.

Selection will be based on submitted CVs and abstracts, considering the potential to contribute to a policy-oriented discussion.
- Short CV (maximum 2 pages, any format)
- Extended abstract in English (500-1000 words, MS Word)
- The abstract should include the main points of the planned paper, as well as brief descriptions of theories/perspectives, research methods, and results and findings
- The paper should be based on empirical research and be policy-oriented
- The author is expected to have obtained comprehensive quantitative and qualitative data on energy demand and supply in one or more cities in Asia or Latin America, since such data are required for some of the activities in the workshop (details to be provided to successful applicants)
- The file name must include the last (family) name of the first author
- Papers may be co-authored, but the first author must be an early-career scholar - Scan of the applicant's PhD diploma or certificate issued by a Brazilian or Japanese institution
