On 3 February 2017, a six-member delegation from Kyoto University, including President Juichi Yamagiwa, Dr Kayo Inaba, executive vice-president for gender equality, international affairs, and public relations, Professor Shigeo Fujii of the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies (GSGES), and Professor Mamoru Shibayama, director of the KU ASEAN Center, visited Mahidol University in Thailand.

The group first paid a visit to the university's executives, including President Udom Kachintorn and Vice-President Sansanee Chaiyaroj. Both sides actively engaged in discussion on the universities' international education, research activities, and how to further bilateral partnership. Then they moved to a teleconference room to have a meeting joined by six other universities conducting collaborative projects with GSGES. Representatives from Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Danang University of Science and Technology (Vietnam), Bogor Agricultural University, Institut Teknologi Bandung (Indonesia), Royal University of Agriculture (Cambodia), and Champasack University (Laos) participated in the meeting.

Following the teleconference, the KU delegates toured the Mahidol campus by electric tram, which operate on five routes around the campus. They then visited the research center for integrated study of medicine and engineering, for which Mahidol University is renowned, and the Mahidol Kyoto University GSGES Office, a KU overseas partnership office established in January 2016, where Dr Suwanna Kitpati Bootanon, cross-appointed to both Mahidol and Kyoto, delivered a briefing on the office's activities.

The visit was concluded with a lunch meeting with Dr Jackrit Suthakorn, dean of the faculty of engineering, and others representing Mahidol University.
