On 29 November 2016, President Juichi Yamagiwa hosted a reception at the Clock Tower Centennial Hall for Kyoto University's international academicians. The annual event aims to promote networking, friendship, and a sense of community among the University's international researchers and lecturers, as well as their colleagues among Japanese faculty and staff, including deans, directors, executive vice-presidents, and the President. This year's attendees exceeded 270 and represented approximately 45 academic departments.
With Professor Yukari Mitsuhashi, vice-director of the International Strategy Office, acting as the mistress of ceremonies, President Yamagiwa welcomed attendees, sharing his view that discussing cultural nuances of different languages can broaden our understanding of academic concepts that, in turn, can enrich the University's education and research environment, making it even more conducive to creativity. Professor Nagahiro Minato, executive vice-president for research, planning, and hospital administration, then delivered a toast to kick off the reception.
The informal atmosphere that ensued helped the participants make new acquaintances and engage in friendly conversation about their work and studies at Kyoto University. Many were accompanied by their families, and numerous young children made use of the nursery room and children's area provided.
Students from the Kyoto University Kyogen Society also gave a performance of traditional comic theater, eliciting a warm round of applause with their lively rendition of the work "Calling Voices".
A festive atmosphere was sustained throughout the scheduled two hours, and then brought to a close with a speech from Dr Kayo Inaba, executive vice-president for gender equality, international affairs, and public relations.
