Kyoto University and the Inamori Foundation co-hosted the 30th Kyoto Prize Forum for High School Students at Kyoto University's Clock Tower Centennial Hall as part of the Youth Development Program organized by the Foundation.
The Youth Development Program is designed for young people ranging from elementary and high school students to university students and held during the annual Kyoto Prize Week events, including the Kyoto Prize presentation ceremony. Kyoto University has been hosting some of the events jointly with the Foundation.
Prior to the Forum, Professor Edward Witten, a 2014 Kyoto Prize Laureate in Basic Sciences in the field of Mathematical Sciences, and his wife held a meeting with Professor Kayo Inaba, Executive Vice-President for Gender Equality, International Affairs, and Public Relations, and Mr Toyomi Inamori, Senior Managing Director of the Inamori Foundation.
Following the opening address by Mr Inamori, Prof Witten delivered a lecture titled "Particles, Waves, and then toward Strings", to a rapt audience of 400 high school students from Kyoto Prefecture.
In the question and answer session after the lecture, Prof Witten and students engaged in a lively discussion. The intellectually stimulating and vibrant Forum was brought to a close with an address by Professor Inaba.
