The 14th Environmental Conservation Engineering Conference (organized by the Society of Environmental Conservation Engineering with cooperation from Kyoto University's Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, and Educational Unit for Studies on Connectivity of Hills, Humans, and Oceans (CoHHO)) took place at Kyoto University's Research Buildings No 3 and No 4.

The first day of the conference comprised a study tour entitled "A Historical Tour of Kyoto and Shiga: a World Heritage Site and the Water Environment of Lake Biwa", including visits to the Amagase Dam, the Aqua Biwa museum, erosion control works (the "Holland Dam"), and Lake Biwa. On the second day, 110 participants gave a total of 47 oral presentations in the morning, covering topics such as water environment, water treatment, solid waste, global environment, energy, environmental economy and policy, hazardous micropollutants, soil, and ground water, while the afternoon session featured 13 "hybrid" presentations -- each consisting of a short oral presentation and a poster display -- and a special lecture by Prof Shinichi Fujita from the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI) on the "30 Years of Trans-Boundary Pollution in East Asia: the Outcomes and Prospects".
