The Bamboo Circle Project (" Take no Wa Project " in Japanese), a volunteer program dedicated to the care and maintenance of the bamboo grove on Katsura Campus, took place on a sunny early-summer day with the participation of over 150 people, including project staff members. Operated jointly by Kyoto University, Sumitomo Life Insurance Company, the Kyoto ModelForest Association, and Kyoto Prefecture, the initiative aims to address environmental issues through the preservation of local bamboo trees.
In the morning, the volunteers worked hard to thin the forest and dig up bamboo shoots. The afternoon program included hiking along the section of the Tokai Nature Trail running near the campus, a visit to a well-maintained bamboo forest, and a lecture by Professor Shozo Shibata from the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, enabling the participants to gain a renewed understanding of the importance of maintaining bamboo forests.
