Kyoto University Museum Concludes an Academic Exchange Agreement with the Marine College (Shandong University at Weihai) (April 27, 2012)


Discussion between Director Ohno and Dr. Chen

The Kyoto University Museum and the Marine College of Shandong University at Weihai concluded an academic exchange agreement on April 27, 2012 at Shandong University at Weihai. Founded in 1901 as the second national university in China, Shandong University is one of the "National Key Universities" designated by the Chinese government. The Marine College focuses on five disciplines--biological science, biological engineering, pharmaceutical science, marine resources and the environment, and applied science--with approximately 80 faculty members, 1,400 undergraduate students, and 80 graduate students.

The signing ceremony was held at the Shandong University Academic Center, with the attendance of Director Terufumi Ohno, Associate Professor Hidetoshi Nagamasu and Associate Professor Masaharu Motokawa from the Kyoto University Museum, as well as Dr. Chen Guanjun (vice president of Shandong University at Weihai), Dr. Liang Zhenlin (dean of the Marine College), and Dr. Wang Renqian (manager in charge of academic affairs) from Shandong University at Weihai. Before the ceremony, Director Ohno and Dr. Chen exchanged views about the importance of establishing a cooperative relationship between the Kyoto University Museum and the Marine College in biodiversity research and education, building on their past research collaboration regarding vertebrates diversity and the century-old traditions of Kyoto University and Shandong University. They also talked about specific activities.

After the discussion, Director Ohno and Dr. Liang signed the academic exchange agreement, which aims to develop research collaboration and academic exchange in research concerning biodiversity--such as taxonomy, systematics, ecology, and conservation biology of terrestrial and marine animals and plants.

In order to further consolidate the cooperative relationship, the delegates from Kyoto University Museum visited laboratories and other facilities at Shandong University at Weihai and exchanged views with the faculty staff and students at the Marine College.
