Yoshiteru Maeno, Professor at the Graduate School of Science, winner of the Bernd T. Matthias Prize.
This internationally recognized Prize is triennially awarded to a researcher who has made outstanding accomplishments regarding the discovery of novel materials in the field of superconductivity research.
Prof. Maeno has won the Prize for his discovery of ruthenate superconductivity and his contributions to the worldwide development of subsequent research in this field. In 1994, Prof. Maeno discovered the superconductivity of strontium ruthenate. Growing extremely high quality crystals, he has been playing a major role in the extensive development of its subsequent research. As a result of his efforts, it has been almost confirmed that spin triplet superconductivity occurs in a state where the electrons form pairs that differ from those in conventional superconductors.
The awarding ceremony was held on September 9, 2009 at the Ninth International Conference on Materials and Mechanisms of Superconductivity.
