On 10-11 November 2018, the Kyoto University Asian Studies Unit (KUASU) held the 11th Next-Generation Global Workshop (NGGW), themed "Self, Others and Community". The conference explored how the three concepts are formed and relate to one another in a given social and historical setting, from the viewpoints of philosophy, sociology, literature, and other branches of the humanities and social sciences.
A total of 42 papers, 16 from Kyoto University and 26 from overseas institutions, were presented in 14 sessions, among which were "New Business Trend", "Ageing Society and Care", "International Affairs", "Culture and Religion", "Cultural Exchange in East Asia", and "Nationalism".
As the conference concluded, many of the participants left positive feedback such as: "The presentations were highly interdisciplinary, spanning a wide variety of fields. I think this type of event represents an important step in breaking down disciplinary barriers"; "The 2018 NGGW provided me with an invaluable opportunity to gain information on transcultural and transdisciplinary studies"; and "I was very pleased to receive comments, questions, and feedback from other researchers, peers, and professors".
Since its inauguration in 2008, NGGW has annually provided coming generations of scholars with a series of skill development opportunities, from preparing presentations, to participating in international conferences, and to submitting papers to English-language journals. The organizers hope that these experiences help participants learn to harness their full potential and build successful academic careers.
