On 3 October, Kyoto University's new doctoral program, "Innovation of Advanced Photonic and Electronic Devices", was selected by the education ministry MEXT to be supported under its newly launched Doctoral Program for World-leading Innovative & Smart Education.
This initiative assists universities in developing five-year doctoral programs that leverage the institutions' unique strengths and build on their graduate-school reform efforts. Programs must also incorporate world-class educational and research resources from external partners — such as other universities, research institutes, and private companies in Japan and/or abroad — through systematic collaboration.
This program is ultimately aimed at producing outstanding leaders for a broad range of sectors, and creating hubs for continuous human capital development/exchange and collaborative research.
The KyotoU Advanced Photonic and Electronic Devices program is one of 15 selected for the initiative in 2018, which attracted 54 proposals from 38 institutions.
