The 2018 Bai Xian Asia Institute (BXAI) Summer Program took place 3–24 August at Peking University.
The three-week BXAI Summer Program is held annually by the Bai Xian Asia Institute as part of its Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program (AFLSP)*, and provides students from various countries with an opportunity to deepen their mutual cultural understanding and engage in cultural exchange activities. Eighty-seven students from sixteen universities participated in the 2018 program.
A closing ceremony was held on the 23rd with Professor Shinsuke Kawazoe, executive vice-president for student affairs and library services, attending on behalf of Kyoto University. The ceremony began with addresses from Professor Yuan Ming, dean of Peking University’s Yenching Academy, and Mr Shinichiro Watari, board governor of BXAI. A keynote lecture was then delivered by Mr Nick Cotton, executive director of Outward Bound Hong Kong, who spoke about the importance of rising to challenges without the fear of taking risks.
After the lecture, completion certificates were presented to the program participants, and certificates of commendation were awarded to those who had attained particularly outstanding achievements. An address was then delivered by Ms Ronna Chao, CEO of BXAI, who encouraged the BXAI scholarship students in their future endeavors.
The ceremony was then brought to a close with the official handover of the summer program venue, conducted by Mr Ronald Chao, honorary chairman of BXAI. The venue for the 2019 program was passed from Peking University, represented by Professor Ming, to Kyoto University, represented by Professor Kawazoe.

* Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program (AFLSP)
AFLSP was established in 2014 by the Bai Xian Asia Institute Ltd to provide young people in Asia with study-abroad opportunities, with the goal of advancing cross-cultural understanding and cultivating human capital who can contribute to regional and global peace and development. Six selected universities in Japan and China, including Kyoto University, serve as “Anchor Universities” for the program. These and several other participating institutions together host approximately 100 scholarship students each year. Kyoto University annually welcomes ten AFLSP scholarship students while sending two undergraduate or graduate students to one of the program’s designated universities in East Asia and Southeast Asia.
