From 1 June to 31 July 2018, the Graduate School of Energy Science (GSES) held a credited internship program for eight students from the Chiang Mai University (CMU) Faculty of Engineering, with support from Kyoto University provided under the 2018-2019 Wild & Wise Collaborative Learning Program.
Each hosted by one of eight GSES laboratories, the interns worked on projects based on their interests and departmental affiliations. In addition to lab work, activities included field trips around the island of Awaji, focusing on energy facilities that are part of the Awaji Future Island Project. Among the featured technologies were a spa-heating system fueled by bamboo chips; production processes for rapeseed oil and waste cooking-oil-based biodiesel; and a solar power generator system with panels installed on an irrigation pond.
The CMU students also went sightseeing in and around Kyoto, attending a tea ceremony in kimono , and going to the Gion Festival with their Japanese peers.
During the final week, the interns delivered presentations and submitted lab notebooks for grading. After evaluating their work, program supervisors expressed confidence in the students' ability to make the most of their experiences at GSES and continue their studies in Thailand.
