On 11 April, the Center for Integrative Medicine and Physics (iCeMS-CiMPhy), a part of Kyoto University Institute for Advanced Study (KUIAS), held its kick-off symposium, gathering more than a hundred participants, including researchers and invited speakers from Japan and abroad.
The event opened with iCeMS-CiMPhy Director Motomu Tanaka greeting the participants and giving a brief introduction of the Center. This was followed by words of congratulations from KyotoU Provost and Executive Vice-President for Strategy Coordination, Research, Planning, and Hospital Administration Nagahiro Minato; KUIAS Director-General Shigefumi Mori; and Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS) Director Susumu Kitagawa.
Tanaka then delivered a speech on the Center’s vision for integrative physics-medicine research. Scientific talks followed a group photo session, with the invited speakers discussing their research, past collaborations with Tanaka, and projects they plan to pursue as visiting professors at iCeMS-CiMPhy. The speakers were: Heidelberg University Professors Anthony D Ho (hematology) and Thomas Holstein (developmental biology), KyotoU Professor Emeritus Takao Ohta (theoretical physics), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology’s Professor Martin Bastmeyer (cell biology), and Doshisha University Professor and KyotoU Professor Emeritus Kenichi Yoshikawa (nonlinear physics).
The Symposium closed with Tanaka expressing his delight and gratitude for the opening of iCeMS-CiMPhy.
The event concluded with a tour of the KUIAS Main Building and a reception, where lively discussions took place on attendees' research plans.
