On 31 October 2017, President Juichi Yamagiwa and other senior officials paid a visit to the Japanese Embassy in Vietnam. They were in Hanoi to attend the International Symposium on the Education and Research of the Global Environmental Studies in Asia, held 30 October - 1 November by KU and Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST).
The delegation consisted of seven members including Dr Masao Kitano, executive vice-president for education, information infrastructure, and evaluation; and Professor Shigeo Fujii of the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies (GSGES), who met with Mr Kunio Umeda, ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Japan to Vietnam, and Ms Ai Chuman, second secretary.
Ambassador Umeda is a KU alumnus (Faculty of Law 1978), and on 29 October attended a reunion held by Kyoto University Vietnamese Alumni. The Embassy was a sponsor of the KU-HUST International Symposium.
President Yamagiwa thanked Ambassador Umeda for attending the reunion and supporting the ongoing Symposium. He then introduced the University's international education and research initiatives, such as Kyoto iUP (Kyoto University International Undergraduate Program) among them. Ambassador Umeda briefed the guests on the state of education and research in Vietnam, with a focus on relations with Japan.
The discussion continued for about an hour, before the participants had their photos taken in front of the Embassy building, concluding the visit.
