From 1 through 3 November 2017, the Human Health Sciences Department of the Graduate School of Medicine, together with the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt), held the sixth International Symposium on Regenerative Rehabilitation in the city of Pittsburgh, USA. Around 200 attended from across the world.
Experts on diverse fields in medicine, including researchers, medical doctors, and rehabilitation professionals, gathered to discuss how to improve the safety, efficacy, and economic efficiency of rehabilitation for patients treated with regenerative procedures. The focus was on supporting the recovery and reintegration of patients who received these new treatments for severe conditions.
Professor Hiroshi Kuroki of the KU Graduate School of Medicine, a co-chair of the event, delivered a welcome speech. The talk featured a video message from Dr Shinya Yamanaka, director of the Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA), expressing high expectations for the future of regenerative rehabilitation. Thirty-three leading researchers from a wide variety of fields then shared their latest achievements. Two KU Associate Professors -- Hidetoshi Sakurai of CiRA and Ryosuke Ikeguchi of the University Hospital -- delivered lectures on rehabilitation following skeletal-muscle and peripheral-nerve regenerative procedures, respectively.
The Symposium facilitated a lively discussion on regenerative medicine, a relatively new area of interest in Japan, concluding on a high note.
