From 25 through 29 September, the Kyoto University Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) hosted this year's International Conference on Digital Preservation (iPRES), an annual international conference on the preservation and long-term management of digital materials. The event was held in the fifth-floor hall of the University's International Science Innovation Building and other venues. CSEAS Professor Shoichiro Hara chaired the organizing committee.
Themed "Keeping Cultural Diversity for the Future in the Digital Space -- from Pop-Culture to Scholarly Information", the five-day conference included three keynotes as well as oral and poster presentations on diverse topics -- some academic and others practical -- such as preservation of research data, computer games, and other software, as well as topics involving digital-preservation systems and metadata.
Approximately 200 researchers and library and archive experts attended from Japan, Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania for discussion and networking.
As this was the first iPRES to be held Japan, the 2017 conference drew a large number of attendees from Asia. On 26 September, a session on the state of digital preservation in Asia was featured. The session proved highly productive, with presenters and participants sharing information on various parts of Asia and discussing common issues.
