Organized jointly by the Graduate School of Energy Science and Human Security Development Educational Unit, the "Winter Seminar on Human Security Development and Energy Science" took place 10-20 January 2017 with 25 undergraduate students taking part from eight ASEAN countries.
The program featured ten lectures: "Introduction to Human Security Development", "Global Energy Situation", "Energy Grid", "Energy Storage", "Nuclear Fusion/Fission Energy", "Energy Efficiency", "Technologies for Reducing CO2 Emissions", "Solar Energy", "Biomass Energy", and "Automobiles in the Future". These were delivered by teaching staff from Kyoto University's Graduate School of Energy Science, Institute of Advanced Energy, and Human Security Development Educational Unit, and the Institute of Technology of Cambodia.
Other activities included field trips to two energy-related facilities -- the Senboku terminal of Osaka Gas Co Ltd and the Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute (KURRI) -- where participants learned about various aspects of renewable and non-renewable energy technologies, including the basics, utilization, and potential social, economic, and technical hurdles to wider adoption in Japan.
Throughout the seminar, students worked in five groups engaging in regular discussions and making presentations. For the final day, the group was given the task of estimating the energy requirements of a hypothetical country, and developing a plan for building a power generation system that would best serve local needs.
The program also included cultural activities in Kyoto, as well as opportunities to engage in multinational and multidisciplinary discussions on human security, energy, environment, and other topics of interest.
