On 9 November, Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine and AstraZeneca KK co-hosted a lecture event as part of the "Nobel Prize Inspiration Initiative in Japan" at Shiran-kaikan, featuring Dr Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, the 2008 Nobel Prize laureate in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of HIV.
Under an overall theme of "Women and Science" the event aimed at underscoring science's appeal and fascination. Around 200 participants, including young researchers and students, took advantage of the opportunity to listen to a lecture by a distinguished senior scientist.
In the morning, following an opening address by Professor and Dean Shinji Uemoto of the Graduate School of Medicine, Dr Barré-Sinoussi delivered the keynote lecture "From HIV's discovery to global health challenges of the 21st Century". A panel discussion "My science career -- Development through a variety of paths and steps" took place in the afternoon, joined by Professor Yoshiko Takahashi of the Graduate School of Science and Associate Professor Youko Hamazaki of the Graduate School of Medicine. Panelists actively discussed career-building for women in science, providing a valuable opportunity for young researchers and students to envision and design their own futures in the sciences.
