On 15 December, KIZUNA hosted an origami workshop, taught by members of the volunteer group Okoshiyasu-Origami, which offers classes at the Kyoto Prefectural International Center and other venues.
Participants first learned how to fold a poinsettia, perfect for a Christmas ornament. They appeared to be deeply impressed with the art of making paper crafts without using scissors or glue, as they concentrated on assembling three colored sheets into elaborate flower-like shapes.
Break time was spent engaging in cross-cultural communication with each other.
Participants then learned to fold iwaizuru , celebratory cranes for the New Year. They helped each other and asked the instructors questions as they worked on the models, which are much more complex than regular orizuru , while enjoying the process of creation.
By the end, all participants, including those with no previous origami experience, had produced beautiful works, which they took home as souvenirs.
The event proved a great opportunity for all to experience a traditional art form, and to get to know each other.
