A recycling fair was held recently on the Uji campus to support international researchers and students.
The annual recycling fair is now in its eleventh year. It provides a place where international researchers and students can pick up household items donated by faculty and staff on the Uji campus, such as ready-to-assemble furniture, appliances, futon mats, clothes, table- and kitchenware, toys, and children's goods. The event is highly anticipated by Uji's international community, consisting of researchers and students and also their family members.
This year, around 680 items were on display at the fair, held at the Hybrid Space at Uji Obaku Plaza. The event attracted 64 people, including researchers, students, and families.
As in the previous years, an exchange meeting took place simultaneously to promote interaction between international participants and faculty and staff. In the meet-and-greet space next to the fair venue, visitors enjoyed conversation over tea in an amicable atmosphere.
Directors of several Uji institutions joined the meeting. Following welcoming remarks by Professor Takashi Watanabe of the Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere (RISH), Vice-Director and Professor Kin'ya Nishigami of the Disaster Prevention Research Institute, and Vice-Director and Professor Takashi Aoyama of the Institute for Chemical Research also delivered greetings. A home appliance raffle then took place, marking a highlight of the event.
Around 500 researchers and 130 students from abroad visited or came to live near the Uji Campus this year. Kyoto University plants to continue offering similar support events and projects in the future.
