On 21 September, Kyoto University Alumni in Myanmar, an association of KU alumni of Burmese nationality, held its first gathering in Yangon with Professor Kayo Inaba, Executive Vice-President for Gender Equality, International Affairs, and Public Relations, in attendance. She was in town for an academic exchange event hosted by the University of Yangon.
The reunion was organized jointly with Yangon Nouseikai, which comprises Myanmar-based former members of athletic clubs that belong to Kyoto University Sports Union. A total 31 persons attended, including Dr Nweni Wai, chairperson of the newly established Kyoto University Alumni in Myanmar, and Mr Yusuke Murota, who chairs Yangon Nouseikai.
Welcome addresses by Dr Nweni Wai and Mr Murota were followed by congratulatory remarks from Executive Vice-President Inaba, who also discussed Kyoto University's ongoing reform initiatives, which are focused on vitalizing education, and its vision. Professor Inaba explained that, even as it works to maintain a calm environment that is conducive to academic and research success, her university is committed to nurturing talent and serving as a "window" through which its students, after receiving sufficient support and encouragement, venture into the world.
Attendees, representing a broad spectrum of professions and age groups, appeared to relish the opportunity to catch up with old friends in a relaxed atmosphere. "It was great to be reunited with people I hadn't seen in a long while," commented one alumnus. "My network of KU-affiliated friends has expanded, thanks to events like this," remarked another.
The gathering ended on a high note with closing remarks by Mr Hisashi Tatsunokuchi, Honorary Chairman of Yangon Nouseikai.
It is anticipated that the newly established alumni association will serve to expand and strengthen the network of former KU students based in Myanmar.
