"Kyoto ICT Education Model Project" to launch, harnessing big data in learning for future education (2 June 2015)

Kyoto University will launch an experimental research venture "Kyoto ICT Education Model Project", seeking to develop an effective education model using information communication technology (ICT) in an environment where each student has a tablet PC. This project will involve collaboration with the Kyoto City Board of Education, Microsoft Japan Co Ltd, and NEC Corporation.

The goal of this project is to realize personalized (tailor-made) education, which could help students fully realize their potential. To this end, data on study progress will be closely examined using information technology and increasingly widely-used tablet PCs.

Subject school and students

120 students (three classes of 40 each) in their third year at the Junior High School Affiliated with Kyoto Municipal Saikyo Senior High School will take part.

Details of the project

All 120 students will be provided with tablet PCs, for study use both at school and at home. Data collected related to tablet PC use will be examined to find how the students change and progress in the course of their studies. Correlations between learning patterns and academic performance are expected to be revealed by collecting and analyzing study log data. Based on the results to be obtained, an education model for enabling students to study effectively using tablet PCs will be developed. The achievements of this project will be presented at academic research seminars or on the other occasions around the end of FY2015.
