Juggling Donuts performing on stage
A welcome party for international students, hosted by the President, was held at the Kyoto University Clock Tower Centennial Hall.
This year's edition of the long-running event, which dates back to 1961, was attended by 76 people representing the University -- the Executive Vice-Presidents, Deans, Directors, Supervisors, and officials from external organizations -- and a total of 292 newly enrolled international students, all of whom mingled with each other in a relaxed atmosphere.
The party began with a welcome speech by Executive Vice-President Akihiko Akamatsu, given on behalf of President Hiroshi Matsumoto. This was followed by an address of thanks from UK-born research trainee Mr Thomas Heaton (specialties: Japanese language and culture), who, representing the international students, delivered his speech in perfect Japanese and English. The toast was proposed by Director-General Junichi Mori of The Organization for the Promotion of International Relations (OPIR).
The welcome entertainment, the main staple of this event, kicked off with a dance act entitled "Kyoen! Sodefure" by Saikyo Zensen, the University's dance team. Clad in original costumes that looked like kimono adapted to the contemporary era, the dancers performed spectacular moves that caused the whole crowd to erupt in cheers.
Next, the Juggling Donuts came on stage to dazzle and amuse the audience with their skillful and comical performance.
A group of Chinese students followed this with their own song and dance, before, at the proposal of a Mongolian student, some members of the audience came forward to sing several different-language versions "If You're Happy and You Know It", one after another, as the entire crowd clapped and cheered.
After these performances, students continued to enjoy one another's company, snapping photos and laughing together, until the very end of the party.
