KIZUNA presents 'kintsugi' workshop (21 February 2020)

Student Lounge KIZUNA's February event was a kintsugi (golden joinery) workshop, held on Friday the 21th with instruction provided by staff from Urujyu.

The workshop began with a brief lecture on the art form and its history, followed by a demonstration of a pre-treatment procedure. A lively discussion ensued with participants asking questions about numerous aspects of kintsugi, including the history, materials used, and steps involved.

It was then time for everyone to experience the actual joining and repairing process, which in this case consisted of applying lacquer and powdered silver to cracked and chipped Edo-period sobachoko cups. Some participants initially had difficulty taking the right amounts of materials on their brushes and controlling their brush strokes, but after diligently honing their skills, all of them eventually finished repairing and decorating the cups to take home as souvenirs.

The event provided a great opportunity for everyone to learn the traditional Japanese repairing technique and experience the spirit of cherishing all things.
